Google Street View and Public Health

Google Street View of VCU Medical Center

Last night I came across an interesting paper on using Google Street View for public health purposes.  The premise is that neighborhood environment characteristics such as aesthetics, physical disorder, pedestrian safety, motorized traffic/ parking, infrastructure for active travel, sidewalk amenities, and social and commercial activity influence health and health behavior. An on-ground audit of neighborhood environments is costly and time-consuming. Investigators utilized Google Street View to audit neighborhood environments more easily and at lower cost.  The audits via Google Street View were highly concordant with prior field audits.

I thought that this remote, visual surveillance was neat.

My assistant thought that it was creepy.
