2019 UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting, Liverpool, England: Day 3- Parting Comments

Thank you to the UK Infection Prevention Society for their generous invitation to speak at and attend their Annual Meeting. It was an honor to be part of the program.

A special thank you to all of the kind delegates, speakers and organizers for their generous comments on both my lectures and our published work (VCU Hospital Infection Prevention Program). I am humbled.

The program was high quality with provocative perspectives on infection prevention and control from the United Kingdom and beyond, to broaden the horizon. The plenary by Martin Kiernan, spanning the top 5 papers in the last 60 years of infection prevention, was the day's highlight.

As always, and as previously stated, I learn much more than I contribute at these events.

Gratus semper.

The Great Health Con: Poo Fingers, by Dr. Phil Hammond, English Physician-Comedian at the UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting Day 2

I met Dr. Phil Hammond today at the UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting. His medical-comedy routine was spot on and a welcome change from the typical meeting seminars.

Below is a clip from a similar stand up by Dr. Hammond.

2019 UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting, Liverpool, England: Day 2

Day 2 of the IPS Annual meeting, Liverpool, England.

The day contained superb lectures on relevant topics such as Candida auris and the challenges of balancing volume and value in patient care.

The highlight, however, was The Infection Prevention Show 2019, a cheeky blend of performance, comedy and medical science with Dr. Phil Hammond, English physician and comedian, website accessible here. A short YouTube video of Dr. Hammond is below.

To quote Dr. Hammond, we should be able "to make informed decisions free from bullshit." I concur.

2019 UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting, Liverpool, England: Day 1

It is great honor to be a part of the UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting.
Thank you to the conference organizers for the generous invitation.

Today's presentations were high quality by an esteemed group of peers from the UK and beyond. Themes included opportunities and challenges for the the advancement of infection prevention and improved disinfection of patient rooms.

My plenary lecture was titled, How Much Can We Prevent and How Hard Should We Try, based on this published manuscript.

The afternoon was followed by a symposium lecture on active detection and isolation for C. difficile. I will wrap up today's obligations as a poster session discussant, in the late afternoon.

Images from the day are below.

As always, I learn much more than I contribute at these events.

In Liverpool, England. The UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting starts tomorrow.

Today was a day (mostly) dedicated to my passions, books and the beautiful game- football.

Meandering in Liverpool, England Prior to the UK Infection Prevention Society Annual Meeting

I’m currently in Liverpool England, to attend the Infection Prevention Society of the UK annual meeting later this week.

Below are a few images from my meanderings through the city streets and the famed dockyards. This includes a visit to the Liverpool museum with its moving John Lennon and Yoko Ono exhibit.

Culture, music, the Beatles, and of course, football (soccer).

A quintessential English city.
