HIV Epidemiology in the USA: More Diverse Than You Think

There is a very informative review in Clinical Infectious Diseases on the Epidemiology of HIV Infection in the United States.

There has been a significant change in the epidemiology of IV/AIDS in the USA. HIV is currently a disease of greater demographic diversity, affecting all ages, sexes, and races, and involving multiple transmission risk behaviors.

The graph below (click image to enlarge) demonstrates the heterogeneity in transmission associated risk factors.

Sadly, 50,000 new HIV infections will continue to be added each year.  One-fifth of persons with new infections are not aware of their serostatus.

With neither a vaccine nor a cure in the immediate future, the remaining challenges  in halting disease transmission, early diagnosis, and access to treatment appear even more pressing.
